Wednesday Workout Recap

Hump day! We’ve made it to the midpoint of the week!

Last week was busy. Aren’t they all though?

Monday – Rest day. Choir rehearsals. Not restful.

Tuesday – FTP test. I came out of this pretty bummed that my watts were so low, but whatever, I have plenty of room for improvement then.

Wednesday – Long day at work, big storms, so by the time the day was done, I was also done, so I grabbed pizza and drinks with a friend. I needed the mental break.

Thursday – Swim practice. This one was frustrating because I kept getting clobbered in the lane. We were also down a coach, so the solo coach was working with the new swimmers and the rest of us were left with sprints. So many sprints. It wasn’t a fun workout.

Friday – Trainer Ride

Saturday – Got on the bike to do my first workout with my new FTP scores… and something was really wrong. My numbers were way higher than they should be… but much more in line with where I though they should be. Using the formula for estimating FTP, I should be aiming for at least 300 watts as a goal. Now, I know I’m not the best cyclist, plus I have heart rate limitations, so I expect to be well below that, but not as low as I was seeing on Monday. So instead of doing the workout, I redid the FTP test, and tacked on some riding to get me to 90 minutes on the trainer. These numbers are much more reasonable. My power meter got an update over the week, so I’m thinking that’s what fixed the issue.

Sunday – 10 mile run. Yay. At least Cherry Blossom won’t be too much of a surprise.

“If I had a million dollars…”

Okay, so a million dollars really isn’t that much, but it’s a catchy Barenaked Ladies song, so it becomes today’s post title.

I’ve been super busy lately and find myself thinking “Man, if I won the lottery, the first thing I would do is hire someone to cook and clean for me.” Because these are things that fall by the wayside. I’ve become a pretty proficient lazy chef and can whip up a fast, healthy meal, but my meals get pretty repetitive. And we won’t talk about the cleaning. My kitchen is always clean, though often cluttered. I can’t handle when things get gross. But dust… well, that happens. And fur tumbleweeds too. I don’t understand how two cats can create so much fur.

But then I started wondering what else I would buy if I won the lottery. Let’s assume it’s a small win, not enough for me to quit my job, but to make some quality purchases. I’d do the boring stuff like pay off my car, of course. And have some stuff done to the house. I think every homeowner has a list of upgrades for “when I have money.”

I’d definitely upgrade my wardrobe. But I hate clothes shopping, so I’d have a personal shopper do that for me. Seems much easier.

And let’s be honest, I’d probably end up buying a super fancy bike and all sorts of super fancy accessories. Maybe I’d buy a small SUV to fit a couple of bikes in as well. Bike transport is important, after all.

Sad bike trainer

My shiny bike trainer had to be disassembled this weekend. It’s a Cycleops Fluid 2 trainer and after years of use (Santa (aka Mom and Dad) gifted it to me in 2011, I believe), it started leaking fluid. Thankfully, the trainer lives on a mat, which prevented any damage to the floor. The mat is mostly for catching sweat and hydration drink that drips down, but thank goodness for the mat.

However, Saris is an awesome company. Their trainers have a lifetime guarantee. So even though the current model of the Fluid 2 trainer is different, they’re sending me a new resistance unit for free! I just have to cover shipping back to them, which is not a big deal, given what a whole new trainer would cost me.

(No, they’re not paying me to say this – I’m just super delighted that a 4+ year old trainer that broke is getting replaced for free.)

Of course, this means I’m trainerless for a week or so. I might go through withdrawal. I love the trainer that much. Conveniently, I probably have some extra hours at work to make up that lost workout time. Yay for job security!
