Sad bike trainer

71fRFBJY38L._SL1500_My shiny bike trainer had to be disassembled this weekend.  It’s a Cycleops Fluid 2 trainer and after years of use (Santa (aka Mom and Dad) gifted it to me in 2011, I believe), it started leaking fluid.  Thankfully, the trainer lives on a mat, which prevented any damage to the floor.  The mat is mostly for catching sweat and hydration drink that drips down, but thank goodness for the mat.

However, Saris is an awesome company.  Their trainers have a lifetime guarantee.  So even though the current model of the Fluid 2 trainer is different, they’re sending me a new resistance unit for free!  I just have to cover shipping back to them, which is not a big deal, given what a whole new trainer would cost me.

(No, they’re not paying me to say this – I’m just super delighted that a 4+ year old trainer that broke is getting replaced for free.)

Of course, this means I’m trainerless for a week or so.  I might go through withdrawal.  I love the trainer that much.  Conveniently, I probably have some extra hours at work to make up that lost workout time.  Yay for job security!

(P.S. – Happy Leap Day!)

Catching Up

This has been a busy week.  Well, a busy week plus.

I love my job, but we’ve been insanely busy.  Without going into too much detail, our department workload has increased, plus we’ve gone from 3 people to 2 on our project team, so I’m at about 175% of normal workload right now.  It’s exhausting!  I have a very understanding boss, but at the same time, we have to get everything done, so it’s been a lot of hours in the office.

I’ve been trying to keep up with  my training, but on Wednesday night, for example, I got out of the office about 2 hours late and was just exhausted, so I had drinks and pizza with a friend and called it a night.  I think I needed that mental break, to be honest.

This weekend should help.  I’m not bringing work home (because I will likely have to the next few weekends), and I plan to sleep in.  And, of course, get my house into shape for my brother and sister-in-law’s visit next weekend.  I’m pretty sure my brother won’t notice the fur tumbleweeds in my house, but my SIL will, and while she probably won’t judge me, since they’ve never seen my house, I should get it in order.  Plus I have to finish assembling their bed.  IKEA furniture is no joke!

I also got my fabulous Team Coeur kit, and need to get pictures taken for that.  Because what everyone loves is putting on spandex and pulling out a camera.  Maybe this will convince me to stop eating peanut butter and chocolate chips for dinner (what, I haven’t had time to go to the grocery store!).

1. Wearing the wrong size.

If you cincher is too small or too big it wont work for you the way its meant to! Make sure you get an accurate measurement.

2. Ordering a size down.

Do not order a cincher smaller than the size you are! It may like a good idea to get one for your goal size but these items already have a high compression to them so ordering a size down would just make it too small and uncomfortable! What’s the point of getting a cincher you can’t fit into.

3. Not giving your waist cincher a day off.

We recommend that you have more than one cincher so that you can alternate them and give the a day to rest in between wears. This will ensure that your item doesn’t stretch out.

4. Not cleaning your waist cincher properly.

Waist cinchers should be cleaned by hand. Wipe off with a moist towel and then allow to completly air dry flat. This is another great reason to have at least 2 cinchers, you can leave one drying while you wear the other.

5. Not storing your waist cincher properly.

Many of us wear our cinchers to the gym or for any kind of workout however make sure you don’t leave the garment in the heat of your car all day after you’re done wearing it! Doing this can cause your cincher to shrink because on the effect of heat to latex. Make sure you store your cincher in room temperature for a longer life.

6. Expecting results after only one use.

Waist training is a process that will require a bit of patience and commitment. You cannot expect to see result after only one wear. This would be like eating one salad and then expecting to have reached your goal weight!

Wednesday Workout Recap

I can’t believe that I came back from Florida just last week.

Monday – Rest day, traveling back from Florida.

Tuesday – Trainer workout

Wednesday – Easy 4 miles.  While watching a Flat Earth video on the recommendation of a coworker.  It was nuts, but totally distracting from the treadmill.

Thursday – Choir rehearsals.  Concert this weekend.  Normally we rehearse MWF on concert week, but Monday got cancelled for weather, and Wed got pushed to Thurs because of an event at the Cathedral.

Friday – Choir rehearsals. Two days in a row really hurts.

Saturday – 90 minutes on the trainer, a bike fit, and lugging an IKEA bedframe up the stairs and assembling it.  I count that as a strength workout.

Sunday – Supposed to do 8, but I opted to sleep in and had time for 5 before my concert.  Go me.

Hey everyone, Thank you for again for stopping by for this...

Hey everyone, Thank you for again for stopping by for this video. I have been seriously so patient (NOT) to film this video for you all. I watched my friend Rocio’s video on Youtube regarding the same topic and kind of almost immediately fell in love with the video and waist trainer… After long searching I found my corset. I believe its similar to hers. We both however purchased from two different sites. So I wanted to train my waist for kind of shape it more. because prior to that I had a very sloppy boyish body figure. And after wearing the corset, I have really been seeing a change in the way my body looks. this will help you get the sexy kim K, beyonce, Nikki kind of a body. So I though I can go ahead and also share my experience with you all as well. To begin here is a link to my friends video.

Here is a direct link to the one I purchased. Also before making your purchase please make sure you measure right and get the right corset:

Here are also other videos on How I’ve been losing weight:

How I went from 178LB to 159 LB

How I lost 2 pound and 2 inches in one week:

Can one sleep with the corset one?

Yes but it is very uncomfortable. I’ve done it and hated it. LOL

Can I use this trainer to workout in?

No considering this is steal boning you cannot. They have special workout ones available that are flexible.

When can you begin corset training?
Corset training does not have a age limit of when one can start however I would best suggest anyone who is above 20. Before that It can be more damaging.

Weight Loss?
This is not a diet or a weight loss plan. Using a corset for waist training is exactly that - training your waist into a new shape. You still need to live a healthy and active lifestyle to lose any weight. This is not a miracle solution. It will however help you feel full faster which may help with portion size but don’t do this alone with plans of losing weight.

Also don’t forget to check me out at my other links.

Support Your Girls with ENELL

enellFor 2016, I’m a proud ENELL Race Ambassador, but if you’ve been following this blog, you’ve heard me sing ENELL’s praises before.  How many times have you heard a fellow athlete say “Yeah, I have to wear two sports bras to prevent the bounce.”  Or “Well, I wear X brand, even though it’s technically too small.”  Or worst of all, how many times have you seen a fellow runner out on the course and thought “How in the world is she running with all that bounce.

Ladies, you don’t have to do any of that.  The ENELL Sport bra is amazing and will keep everything nicely contained for your athletic endeavors.

enell-sport-front-whiteNow, this is no dainty sports bra.  No, it’s serious armor for serious support and comfort.  Want to know why the bra is built as it is?  You get:

  • Comfortable shoulder straps
  • Limited movement
  • Super secure closure that has no risk of popping open
  • No strain on your back
  • Performance fabric

enell-sport-backI only wear the ENELL bras for sport nowadays. All other sports bras have been banished. It’s super comfortable on the bike, on the run, and even in the water for a triathlon.

I’m showing you the white version, but it comes in a couple of fabulous colors, which is my go to option.  Why?  Well, with the cut of my Coeur tri kit, my sports bra shows, especially in the back.  And you know what?  I don’t care.  I think this showing looks better than two skinny straps showing, and it definitely provides better sun protection on my pale, pale skin.  But more importantly, it gives me the support I need.  No crazy bouncing as I run.

The bras aren’t sized like “normal” bras.  Instead, you measure yourself and using their chart or calculator, figure out which size you wear.  They make it very easy and if you’re still unsure, their customer service team is PHENOMENAL.  And if you don’t fit into one of their standard sizes (rare, but it happens), they even do custom fits for a super reasonable price. Seriously, it’s $15 for the setup fee, then the bra is priced like their standard bras, and then if you need more than one alteration, it’s $7.50.  Once they figure out your perfect fit, you’re “on record,” and your new bras are the same price as the regular bra!  For anyone who has ever ordered any custom clothing, you realize just how cheap this is.

So if you are struggling with finding a sports bra to fit a larger chest or are sick of wearing multiple sports bras to keep everything contained, check out ENELL.  I’m always trying to convert my friends, and once they realize how awesomely comfortable they are, they don’t go back.

Superfoods | 4 Benefits of Lemon: Health Hack- Thomas DeLauer

Hello, It’s been a busy week. I have started seasoning...

It’s been a busy week. I have started seasoning (breaking in) my corset and enjoying it thus far. I am learning new ways to lace my corset without assistance and learning how to sit up straight comfortably. At first, unlacing my corset took sometime. My Hubbie saw my struggles and offered his assistance many times. With practice, I am more comfortable lacing my corset by myself. Although, I do appreciate my Hubbie’s help with it because he does a better job. :)

The Plan…

Week 1: Season Corset for 2 hours everyday. (After 1 hr of wearing, tighten corset).

Week 2: Season Corset for 2 hours everyday. (After 1 hr of wearing, tighten corset).

Week 3: Waist Training Begins (Wear corset for 6-9 hours daily).

Initial Measurements (Before):

Under-bust: 28.5 inches
Waist: 27.5 inches
Hip: 35.5 inches

My First Impression:

I apologize again for such the delay in this video. Fortunately, I have solved my computer issues.

*Also, please excuse the bathroom scene, my daughter did not want to miss out on the unwrapping of my corset while she was taking a bath. :)

Drama at the Princess Expo

rihaij / Pixabay

Oh my goodness.  After yesterday’s post went live, I started seeing reports of lots of drama at the Disney Princess Expo.  Some highlights:

Lines.  So many lines.

People shoving and throwing elbows to get merchandise before others.

Women throwing wine glasses and breaking them (I think trying to toss them to each other for buying purposes?).

People grabbing at jackets as they came out of the back room.

People buying entire boxes of merchandise to resell.  Apparently there’s a new rule that you can only buy 25 of any one item, so there’s that.

One of my favorites – people posting items on eBay using photos they took at checkout.  Not even waiting to get back to the hotel room to list that puppy for up to twice what they paid.

My favorite – shoving and punching over merchandise.

Apparently the crowds got so heavy that the Fire Marshal came in and shut it down so the crowds could clear out.

People.  It’s just stuff. I mean, I get the desire to have a cool shirt or jacket for your first half marathon.  I’m sure I’m going to want all of the 70.3 gear later this year.  But can’t we be a little bit civil?

Why I’m not at Princess Half this weekend

This weekend is the Disney Princess 10K and Half Marathon.  I’m not going to be there.  Even though this race was the reason I got into half marathon running, I’ve taken it off of my schedule.  And I’m not the sort of person who has a problem repeating races.

I’ve said it before, but I don’t like what this race has become.  And it’s not runDisney’s fault.  It’s the fault of the racers.  Not all of them, of course, but enough that the spirit of the race has changed.

Let me rewind.

Before Disney racing got really big, this race was a lot of fun.  A friendly women’s race (with a few men along for fun) with great costumes and lots of smiles.  But slowly, the tone changed.  The races started selling out much more quickly and the goal of the race went from finishing to getting the medal and looking fabulous while doing so.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen posting online about how they haven’t run more than 5 miles (often significantly less), but they plan to go out and do their first half marathon in their fabulous costume and it will be great.  And hey, if they don’t finish, they still get the medal, and they’ve earned it.  (Personally, I believe it’s a finisher’s medal, but I can’t let someone else’s decision to take a medal affect me.)  I’ve heard many people say that the medal is earned during training.  But if you admit you didn’t train, then how can you claim to have earned the medal?

Do I think anyone can do a half marathon?  With proper training, yes.  Do I think everyone can do a 3:30 half marathon?  Most people sure, again, with proper training, but depending on your fitness level, it could take you a while to get there.  No shame if you can’t do it.  As people say, you’re still lapping everyone on the couch.  Start with a race with a longer time limit, or start with a shorter race.  Don’t sign up for a race and not train and be surprised when you get swept.

The race has a 16 minute per mile time limit from the last starter.  That means if you start farther up, you have a bit more time. This has led to people sneaking into faster corrals or even having someone else run under their name in a local race so they can get a good proof of time.  Unfortunately, that just leads to people who are way too slow starting in front of people who are significantly faster than them and then blocking the way.

I think the biggest problem is that many racers have developed a sense of entitlement and it is seen heavily at this race.  I run/walk, and my parents race walk.  I have no problem with walkers.  But you can’t walk five across.  Two is fine in the wider parts of the course, and when the course narrows, you need to stay single file.  It’s just the polite thing to do.  Of course, the walkers aren’t the only problem – there are plenty of runners who have no issue shoving slower people out of their way.  Again, politeness and respect for others goes a long way here.

It’s true that if you’re a slower runner, you probably won’t get to stop for pictures if you want to avoid getting swept.  It’s not unfair.  It’s just how life works.  As I said to April in January, it is kind of a bummer to not get pics, but what you can do is go back after the race, get cleaned up, and then get character pictures in the parks.  You actually end up with cuter pictures because the characters will oooh and ahh over your medal.

Now, I don’t mean to scare people off.  This race can still be a lot of fun.  It just lost a lot of the fun for me.  But it would be nice to see it change.  There’s nothing wrong with being polite to the other runners.  In fact, I think it’s more fun when you find yourself meeting new runners on the course and making new friends.  But as I said multiple times about the Donna Half, “This is what Princess is supposed to be.”  A positive environment, a fun run, and people just having fun.

So if you’re running this weekend, be polite, even if people aren’t polite to you.  Kill ’em with kindness.  And have fun and take pictures of the fabulous costumes for me!

Wednesday Workout Recap

Hey look!  I did all my workouts!  Of course it was a taper week, so…

Monday – Rest Day.

Tuesday – Trainer ride.  These get easier the more I do.  Surprise, surprise.

Wednesday – Easy 4 mile run.  This did not get easier.

Thursday – Swim practice. Took it easier than normal, but my shoulders were still quite angry.

Friday – Travel Day plus a long walk on the beach.

Saturday – Touristing

Sunday – Donna Half

And there you go.  I’m looking forward to being able to do more of my runs outside.  The treadmill is great, but I need the elevation changes that come with being outside.

Race Report – 2016 Donna Half Marathon

For the second year in a row, I spent Valentine’s Day with some of my best friends in Jacksonville Beach, FL for the 26.2 with Donna Half Marathon, also known as the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer.  Talk about a race with a positive attitude.  This is possibly the most fun race I have run in the past year.  Don’t get me wrong, I do a lot of great races, but this one is just filled with fun.

But let’s back up.  For this race weekend, I met up with friends and family down in Florida.  Perfect timing too, since DC was expecting more snow and ice (conveniently scheduled for my return day, but that was a problem for Future Megan).

It doesn’t matter how cold it is.  The beach in February is awesome.

Race morning was a bit chilly, but not as bad as I had feared.  The high was going to be in the 50’s, so it was probably somewhere in the 40’s when the race began.  It didn’t feel too cold though, thanks to the bright sun.  This race has ample parking, which means that we drove to the race start to get parking, then sat in the car for a while til we had to head to the start lines.  No corrals, seed yourself, and the half and full runners start together so there are always friends to find.  I even ran into Krissy at the start!  (She had a baby 2 months ago and still beat me.  Not that I’m jealous.)

I wasn’t sure how my run was going to go.  I’ve been focusing on bike training, so while I’ve been getting my runs in, they’ve been indoors and only twice a week.  So I knew this wasn’t going to be as spectacular as last year. Since I had a bunch of really fun friends running, I hooked up with a group I knew I could keep up with who planned to chat and stop at driveway bars and an actual bar around mile 7.  If you can’t run fast, run fun.

At first, we were worried that the race spirit had changed because we didn’t see the normal driveway bars in the first three miles.  Might have been the wind, or we may have just been too slow, because things did pick up as the race went on.  Tons of spectators, and if you wanted to get drunk during the race, it was certainly possible with all of the bars setup.  Lots of people seemed to be throwing parties during the race. One family had rented a bouncy castle for their yard.  At least I assume they rented it and don’t just own it.

Tons of dogs out “cheering” too, and I definitely stopped to pet a few.

As planned, we hit up a bar for shots of Fireball Whiskey at mile 7.  Delicious and didn’t negatively impact my running at all.  I hit the lap button on my Garmin so I could see how much time we lost there.  Right at 8 minutes.  Not bad.  And tasty.

At this point, our group split off a bit and I ended up running with Deb, who I didn’t know super well before the race, but now she’s definitely a friend.  That’s one of the great things about racing.  You’re always meeting new people and making new friends.  And it was sweet of her to run with me when I knew that I was holding her back and she could have finished much faster.

I actually felt pretty good during this race all things considered.  Kept up my intervals and just had a good time.  My final finish time was 3:13:19.  No speed records there, but if I back off the 8 minute stop, that’s not a terrible race for a fun run where I talked with friends and petted a bunch of dogs.

And then we all went back and put our feet into the very cold ocean.

The brave people who got wet. And yes, I am holding coffee. Priorities, people.

Thursday – Drove all the way to swim practice, realized I felt incredibly awful, drove back home, realized I had missed my daily anti-anxiety pill the day before and was pretty much just in withdrawal.  Whoops.  I’m usually better at identifying that feeling.  I’m surprised it took nearly 24 hours for it to set in.

Friday – Easy 45 minute bike ride.  Surprisingly sore.

Saturday – 90 minutes on the trainer.  I have power numbers now, but don’t know what to do with them.

Sunday – 8 mile run.  So much nicer than 12.  Felt not terrible, but I’m clearly ready for full on taper.

Diet Changes

condesign / Pixabay

After yesterday’s Inside Tracker post, someone asked what sort of changes I had made to improve my cholesterol numbers.  And well, I can’t tell you specifically what changes had what effect, but over the past few months, here’s what I’ve been working on in regard to my diet.

Hydration is hard.  There are all sorts of studies that say how much water you need, but basically, the number seems to be somewhere between half an ounce to an ounce of water per pound a day.  So if you weigh 150 pounds, you need between 75 to 150 ounces of water a day.  If it’s hot, if you’re working out, if the air is exceptionally dry, you need to be drinking on the higher end.  If you’re sitting on the couch, you can be on the lower end.  I aim for at least 100 ounces a day.  It was going really well through the fall, and now, not so great.  So I’m working on it.

Processed Food

I was the queen of Lean Cuisines for lunch every day.  When those suckers were on sale, I would stock up.  But that has entirely gone by the wayside.

Added Sugars

I try to keep my added sugars low.  I don’t worry about fruit sugars, but no more snacking on sweets.  I eat a lot of Kind Bars (with 4 or 5 grams of sugar) and drizzle honey on my oatmeal, but that’s about it.  It was a tough switch, but worth it.  I don’t crave sweets like I used to.

Lowfat Products

No more lowfat products for me. Full fat Greek yogurt.  4% fat cottage cheese.  They’re more satisfying and help prevent cravings.  Also, those flavored yogurts?  Check out the sugar content.  It’s ridiculous.

I’m doing my best to ensure that I meet my veggie intake daily.  This often means a giant smoothie filled with chard and kale and whatever else I can cram in, but hey, a bit of pineapple thrown in masks the flavor.  I figure it’s better than nothing.  I also try to eat a bit of avocado every day (as if this is a hardship) to get those healthy fats and other vitamins.

Really, a big key has just been eating mindfully.  The other day, I threw away part of a cookie because it wasn’t that good and I realized it just wasn’t worth it to be eating it.   Admittedly, I’ve fallen off the wagon a bit lately (I blame the Girl Scouts and their evil cookie ways) but I’m working on getting back to it and getting off the weight plateau I’ve hit.  I know that my weight loss has had a positive effect on my health, but I have a ways to go.

To be honest with you, it’s not been that hard.  It takes commitment, but none of what I’m doing is a challenge.  I’m still a lazy cook.  Lunch is often baked chicken, sweet potato, and a veggie.  It looks like I’m eating clean, but mostly I’m just too lazy to do anything else and it’s easy.

It’s all about figuring out what fits best into your schedule and way of life.  You don’t need to be spending all your time in the kitchen to eat properly.

Inside Tracker Update

Last summer, I did my first Inside Tracker test.  What is Inside Tracker?  Well, in brief, it’s a heath analytics company.  You buy a package, get your blood tested, and they give you the results AND tips on how to improve.  Blood Doesn’t Lie, after all.

And just a note – I paid for all of this myself and am reviewing because it’s something I like and want to share.  Zero compensation here (unless you count the high fives from their social media team)!

I initially bought two Performance level tests.  I did the first in June and then intended to do the second 6 months later.  That put me into December, when life was just crazy.  It’s not that the blood test that long, it’s that I knew my stress levels were high and my diet wasn’t great.  While it might have been interesting to see what that did to my numbers, I wanted to know how my diet and weight loss was affecting my overall health.  So I waited and finally got my test done last Tuesday. Amazingly, my results were available by Friday!  So let’s see how things are going.

My biggest concern has been my cholesterol levels.  And while I’m still not perfect, I’m super happy with the changes I’m seeing.

Cholesterol - Improved!

My total cholesterol has dropped.  I went from being borderline high to being in the “normal” range.  Not yet optimized, but I’m just happy to no longer be borderline high.
LDL, improving but high

LDL is also creeping down.  I’m still in the borderline high range, but it’s better.  It’s clearly a slow improvement, and I need to add more fish to my diet.  I admit, my diet is mostly chicken, just because it’s easy to cook.  Inside Tracker sends you an email with an indication of any issues that you should discuss with your doctor, and this was the only one listed.  Last time, this list was much longer.

HDL - Improving, but low

HDLs are still on the lower end, but better.  Again, fish.  More fish.

Triglycerides - Optimized!

This one makes me happy.  My triglycerides weren’t in a bad range, but the drop pleases me.

Vitamin D - Optimized!

Last time, I was surprised by my Vitamin D levels being so low, especially since it was summer and I was outside, though somewhat coated in sunscreen.  Either way, I got that one figured out!  Good job, self.

Glucose - Improving but low

I’m pleased by the drop in my blood sugar.  It’s not great, but I’d always trended on the high end of normal, so this is a good sign.  It’s probably a combination of diet and really working to eliminate added sugars as well as losing weight.

Sodium - Low

Here’s one that surprised me.  My sodium is low.  I worried I would be on the high end since I do add sea salt to a lot of things, specifically my evening avocado toast.  And occasionally a pinch in my oatmeal in the mornings.  (Try it, it’s good!)  But one of the biggest changes I’ve made in my diet is to eliminate processed foods (I should have bought stock in Lean Cuisine given how much of it I used to eat), and those tend to be higher in sodium.  I didn’t really think about it, since my sodium level was fine, but that’s a big change.  It also explains why I frequently end up with leg cramps while in the pool.  I don’t focus on electrolytes in my drinks while indoor training, especially on workouts lasting under 90 minutes, just because I didn’t think it was something I needed.  I’m going to try adding Osmo or Nuun to my water for my shorter workouts as well.

Calcium - Low

This one I don’t love.  Calcium is so important and mine is on a steady drop.  I’m still in a good range, but it’s falling.  I joke that since my sodium and calcium are low, I just need to be eating more salty cheese.

hsCRP - Improving

hsCRP is an interesting one and important for athletes.  My inflammation levels are in a normal zone but still not optimized, and reducing inflammation is so crucial for proper performance and recovery.  I often notice that even after a rest day, I’m still a bit sore, and I’m wondering if this has to do with increased inflammation.  I’m not scientist, but I’m going to continue to work on my diet (see that fish up there?  Yeah.) and do what I need to to get healthy.

So there you go.  You now know more about my health than you ever wanted.  Do you know more about my health than yours?  Might want to check that out.  While this was the last Inside Tracker test I have available, in a few months, I will be purchasing another to continue to track my results.  And the great thing is that I can also input tests that my doctor ordered.  While these aren’t all areas that my doctor tests at my annual physical, she will run my cholesterol numbers, so when I get those back, I will be able to input them into Inside Tracker and see where I stand.

If you try out Inside Tracker, let me know what you think!

A New Project for the Ulman Cancer Fund

For the past few years, I’ve been racing and fundraising for the Ulman Cancer Fund through Team Fight.  (You can donate here or through the link in my sidebar.)  UCF’s mission is:

We change lives by creating a community of support for young adults and their loved ones impacted by cancer.

Simple and to the point.  But they do this is so many ways, from Patient Navigators in hospitals, meetups and support groups, the Cancer to 5K program (where participants get one-on-one coaching to get them to the finish line of a 5K and beyond), and even by things as simple as organizing meal deliveries or yard work assistance for patients going through treatment.

The Ulman Cancer Fund has just announced their next project and I think it’s an awesome one.

In 2016, UCF is breaking ground on the UCF House in East Baltimore near Johns Hopkins, a home away from home for young adult cancer patients and their caregivers.  The house will have space for 8 families, as well as communal space for those staying to spend time together and find support in their shared experiences.

This project is surprisingly less expensive than you would think, but UCF still needs our help.  They are embarking on a $3 Million capital campaign to build and sustain the house for three years as well as increase the programming available for young adults and families impacted by cancer.

No gift is too small.  Every $5 gets us that much closer to the goal.  And if you’re in the DC/Baltimore area and can’t give financially, consider giving of your time.  Thank you all for your support.

Next Weekend’s Race Goals

Yolanda / Pixabay

As typically happens, my next race has snuck up on me.  Next weekend, I’m running the Donna Half. (Side note: I have no idea what the official name of this race is.  The full is the 26.2 with Donna.  So is the half the 26.2 Donna Half?  13.1 with Donna?  Who knows.)

Last year, coming into this race, I had big goals.  I was in great running shape.  I had been pushing myself all winter and working on my speed.  I wanted a strong finish.  And I got it.  Not a PR, but the fastest race I had run in a long time.  But it was also a very telling race for me.  I kept having to slow down due to my heart rate getting too high, and it felt like I had sort of reached my running peak.

(Yes, I realize if it were my actual peak it would have been a PR, but had it been 10 degrees cooler, I would have had less HR issues and may have gotten that PR.)

Now, that’s not to say that I won’t shave off a few minutes here and there with temperature and weight loss and the right course, but  it was a realization that I’m not going to get much faster no matter what I do.  And that’s okay.

This winter, I’ve been focusing on my cycling.  Lots more time on the bike.  And I’m much happier.  I enjoy trainer workouts so much more than running workouts.  So I still feel like I’m in good shape, just not running focused shape.

I’m not worried about the race.  It has a 32 minute per mile pace requirement.  Yes, you read that right.  32 minutes per mile.  I can totally do that.  So the question is what do I do?  Do I go out and push to see where I’m at?  Do I stop at all of the driveway bars (and the actual bar at mile 7)?  I’m thinking the real answer is somewhere in between.  I want to run strong and not lollygag my way through the race, but I also want to be sure I’m having fun. I said a while back that I don’t want to run any more 3+ hour half marathons, and so that doesn’t allow me a lot of lollygagging time.

So we’ll see what happens.  The goal ultimately is to have fun, because if it’s not fun, why do it?

Anyone else running Donna?

Wednesday Workout Recap

Hey look, I got in all most of my workouts this week!

Monday – 10 mile run.  On the treadmill.  Because there was snow.  It was not fun, but it is done.

Tuesday – Trainer workout.  Pushed RPMs and struggled to get to the 110 goal, but did my best.

Wednesday – Easy 4 miler.

Thursday – Finally back in the office today after nearly a week at home thanks to the snow.  And the roads were AWFUL.  By the time I got home, I was so sick of dealing with it that I refused to go back out.  No swimming for me.

Friday – Easy 45 minute bike workout, plus weight lifting.  I really need to work on my core strength for better comfort in aero.

Saturday – 90 minute workout in the trainer.  Coach gives me a specific workout to do for these, so it’s not as bad as just pedaling for 90 minutes.  Much easier on my brain.

Sunday – 12 mile treadmill run.  NOT easy on the brain.  Could have gone outside, but the trails are in crap shape and I didn’t want to try to plot out a sidewalk course, considering half the sidewalks still aren’t cleared.  So… I got it done.  It wasn’t pretty at all, but it’s over.
