I answer some of the most common questions pertaining to waist...

I answer some of the most common questions pertaining to waist reduction:
1. How fast can one get from a natural waist of [insert start measurement here] to [insert end measurement here] ?
2. Does my waist expand again once I take off the corset?
3. Have I achieved any waist reduction (out of the corset) from my waist training?
4. Is this reduction of the natural waistline permanent?
5. What must be done to get permanent effects from waist training?
6. What happens when one reaches their waist training goals?

Next Up – Tinker Bell Half Marathon

tbhmw2016_bannerNext up on the race calendar is the Tinker Bell Half Marathon.   I haven’t run this race since the inaugural year, so I’m looking forward to going back for the 5th anniversary to see how much it has changed.  I’m also excited to go back to Disneyland.  It’s been a few years, and I always love visiting.  Even when crowded, it always feels so much less hectic than a trip down to Walt Disney World.

In terms of the race, I’m feeling relatively unprepared.  I mean, I’m fairly sure I’m trained well enough, though let’s be honest, anything can happen.  I’m not in any danger of getting swept or anything, but I’ve been focusing so much on my biking that I forget that I’ve got a running race on the schedule.

This is the last runDisney race on my schedule for a while.  I’ve definitely gotten a bit burnt out by the the cost and the attitudes.  My worst experiences have been at Princess, so I’m hoping this women’s themed race doesn’t have the negative presence that I’ve seen there.

I think the biggest problem is that these have gone from running events to… marketing events?  Social events?   Experiential events?  I don’t know what to call them.  But the racing is no longer the draw, and that feels weird.  I like a good race experience as much as the next person, but it’s the actual race that is the draw, not the surrounding experience.  I actually want to run.  I don’t think everyone who signs up for these races feels that way.

Either way, next up, it’s off to California (which is stupidly far from DC, so it’s going to be a lot of traveling).  Here’s hoping it’s somewhat of a relaxing trip and that I don’t end up on the phone with the office half the time!

Cooking for One

Cooking for one person isn’t a lot of fun.

Unless you really like cooking, I suppose.  Which I do not.  I don’t hate it, but it’s not something I’m going to do just for fun.

And let’s not even talk about the “fun” of cleaning up the kitchen.

Still, I’m trying to make my diet more well rounded and less “grilled chicken breast, steamed veggies in the microwave, baked sweet potato.”  Which is pretty much my default meal.  It’s nutritionally sound, I suppose, but oh so very boring.

I’ve been getting a Blue Apron box every other week for the past few weeks, which has been working out well.  The two person box means that I get at least six meals out of every box, sometimes more, depending on how big the servings are.  And the food is pretty good, though I probably should be bulking it up with more veggies.   That would allow me to stretch the meals even further, now that I think about it.

Cooking

This is what happens when I forget to bring a real fork to work and end up having to use the child’s fork I keep at my desk. Why I don’t keep a real fork at my desk, I do not know

Because I workout after work, I’ve discovered that the best way for me to plan my meals is to have my biggest meal after lunch.  After a hard workout, the last thing I want to do is eat a big meal, so I often have a green smoothie with some toast or cottage cheese or something along those lines.

So on the evenings that I have a lighter workout, I’m often cooking and packaging up meals for lunch for the next two days.  The other option is bigger batch cooking on the weekends, which does happen, but then I end up freezing things, and not everything I’m cooking does well after having been in the freezer.  When I’m really on my game, I batch cook some soups or stews and freeze them in individual portions so that when I run out of time, I can just grab something for lunch that day.

But lately, I’ve just been eating out on those days.  Thankfully, I have a lot of great healthy options in the area, but it’s not been great for my wallet, that’s for sure.

I’m always looking for tips on the best way to handle cooking for one person and how others handle eating healthy while not eating the same thing every day all the time.  Services like Blue Apron certainly help (and I’ll likely try out Hello Fresh again in the next few months – I used them early in their existence and it was terrible).  What works best for you?

Wednesday Workout Recap

Unsplash / Pixabay

Another week, another workout recap.

Monday – Rest Day

Tuesday – Hard hour on the trainer followed by a 1 mile run through the neighborhood.  My neighborhood is hillier than I realized.

Wednesday – Four mile run followed by a strength workout

Thursday – Team Fight swim.  Sprints!  So much swimming, but it felt pretty good because it was self timed rather than group timed. I appreciate being able to push myself rather than just feeling slow because I can’t keep up with everyone.

Friday – Easy 45 minute bike

Saturday – Went out for a 12 mile run but I had totally dead legs for no apparent reason.  After three miles, nothing was changing, so I gave up and opted for rest.

Sunday – 21 mile ride around the Booty Loop to get practice in aero.

Cyber Bullying

Pixies / Pixabay

Over the past week, our local news has been covering the case of a missing 31-year-old female firefighter named Nicole Mittendorff.  She was also a local triathlete, so the triathlon community was also following the story and offering support.

Her body was found in a local park, and while the press hasn’t shared details (and rightfully so), they have released that a suicide note was found in her car.

Terribly sad that such a lovely young woman found herself in such an awful situation.  But we can never know what another person is going through.

And then more information came out.  She was apparently the victim of cyberbullies, people claiming to be her fellow firefighters.

Now, it’s unclear whether this led to her suicide, but it certainly can’t have helped.  The information posted has been called “raunchy,” “lurid,” “sexist,” and “offensive.”  Apparently some of the postings contained her locker combination and discussions of what was found in her locker.

Obviously, this bullying wasn’t all done online – I’m sure some of it was also in person, and it’s an unfortunate situation that women in firehouses find themselves in all too often.

But it always surprises me how much hatred people are willing to spew on the internet.  There are entire blogs out there devoted to hate speech about a person.  Now, I don’t mean those sites that are out there trying to counter what someone is trying to say.  (Anti Dr. Oz sites come to mind, for example.)   But there’s a difference between saying “Joe is wrong, and here are some facts to show you why” and “Joe is a moron.  And ugly.”

Maybe it has to do with the general anonymity of the internet.  After all, you can make an account on many sites without ever having to share your name or email address.  Of course, people are just as happy to spew hatred on Facebook, which is linked to their real names.

Will the people who bullied Nicole ever be caught?  Who knows, and at the end of the day, it won’t change anything for her.  And obviously nothing I say is going to convince a cyber bully to stop his or her actions.  But it’s an interesting time we find ourselves in, and is there anything we can do to change it?

“Stolen” water at the London Marathon?

We’ve all heard stories of people going a bit crazy after a race and loading their arms up with the “free” post-race food that’s supposed to be for the runners.  I’ve seen people walking away with boxes of muffins or bagels, and if there’s donuts, it’s pretty much an impossibility that there will be any left for the last runners.

And of course, it’s not just the runners who do it.  Spectators are just as guilty, and let’s call it what it is – it’s theft.  After your race, you get one of everything that the race is handing out.  If the nice volunteer tells you “Hey, we have a TON of bananas, and you’re near the end, so take an extra one if you want,” by all means, go for it.  You say your kid is there with you and didn’t run but wants a post race cookie?  Well that’s fine, the kid can totally have a post race cookie – if you give him yours.  Okay, maybe you can have a cookie if there are a ton left.

A story that made the rounds yesterday was about how a “mob” of people stole water from the runners during the London Marathon.  Allegedly, it happened right after the elites came through and suddenly people showed up loading up carts and bags with case upon case of water.

What?!  That is ridiculous!

But let’s do a little more research.  This story all came out thanks to a video.

In this video, you can see thousands of water bottles along the side of the road.  Those aren’t from the elites.

And if you see the runners coming past, well, they are few and far between.  And those certainly aren’t the runners right behind the elites.

Finally, the guy filming says something about how “the last coach has come past so the marathon runners are on their own,” and you can see a bus in the background, which I interpret to mean that we’re down to stragglers.

So… were these people supposed to be taking water?  It seems entirely possible that they were told by a volunteer that the leftovers were available.  Did it feel a bit greedy to see people loading up cases like that?  Sure, but I’m not sure that it’s the horrible deed so many people seem to be claiming it was.

Spring weather makes me happy

Spring! Couleur / Pixabay

Spring!  I think spring is finally here!  At least if the coating of yellow pollen on my car is any indication.  Yesterday I hit the rear windshield wiper to clear off some of the pollen and it was horrifying how much went flying into the air.

While I love my indoor workouts, I’m so excited to finally be able to go outside and get in quality workouts again.  There is no substitute for riding hills or pounding the pavement.  Seeing as I have a 12 mile run on the schedule for Saturday, I’m very excited to not have to do it indoors.

(Do some people run outside all winter?  Yes.  Do I?  No, mostly for safety.  It’s less about the conditions and more about the number of people out.  Safety in numbers and all.  If it’s a nice clear day, I’ll head out, but the gloomy rainy days are good for no one.)

I’m not so much looking forward to the heat of summer, though I know I’ll have to be training with it to be ready for my 70.3.  No way around that one.  It’s gonna be hot.

But for now, I’m just going to enjoy the nice weather.  Throw the windows open while I’m home, and spend as much time as I can outside.  After the ridiculous winter we had, we deserve it.

Wednesday Workout Recap

Peggy_Marco / Pixabay

I think meeting all my workouts for a week earns me a trophy, don’t you?

Monday – Rest day.  Okay, so this one’s hard to screw up.

Tuesday – I did NOT want to, but I went to the pool in the morning for a 1600m swim.  Once I actually got there, it wasn’t so bad.

Wednesday – I was exhausted after a late day at work, but ran 4 miles on the treadmill anyway.  This is where I earned that trophy.

Thursday – Team swim.  This was awesome.  Lots of long drills with little rest.  It was perfect and I felt like I really got in a solid workout.  It showed that I need to strengthen my neck muscles though.

Friday – Hour structured trainer workout followed by a hilly one mile run through the neighborhood.

Saturday – Ten mile run.  It went really well until my asthma kicked in around mile nine.  I have exercise induced asthma but it really doesn’t bother me often.  It manifests in a sort of wheezy cough at the end of a workout, and it isn’t bad, just makes it tough to run.  I wonder if the sheer amount of pollen in the air caused the flare up.  I didn’t bring my inhaler with me, but I should have.  I always carry it racing, just not always while training.

Sunday – Joined the group bike ride at Princeton Sports.  It was tough and also scary being out on my tri bike for the first time with the group.  But according to my Strava data, I had a pretty sweet ride. So I just have to keep on killing it.

The Boston Marathon and Charity Runners

imagesYesterday was the Boston Marathon.  If you’re a runner, you might have been stalking the results, not just for the winners, but for your friends running.  A number of my friends and teammates were out yesterday and I had tracking setup for each and every one of them.  I couldn’t watch the live stream this year, but I was following the race through Twitter and other updates.

An interesting debate came out in the afternoon over charity runners.  I’ve talked a bit about what it takes to get into Boston, and how some people think it’s okay to cheat to get a Boston entry, but I really didn’t dwell on the charity entries too much.

Boston is the holy grail for marathon runners.  People will work an entire season to get a BQ time.  But that’s not the only way to get into the race.  You can also get a charity entry.  And according to some things I’ve read, the number of charity entries has been growing.  I’m not sure how accurate that is, but according to a post on Runners World, 80% of the entries into Boston are time qualifiers, meaning that 20% of the runners get in some other way.  But that entire 20% isn’t charity runners.

In 2016, there were 30,000 entries available.  That makes 24,000 qualified runners.  I’m not sure of the numbers for 2016, but in 2015, there were 2,585 charity entries.

(Who are the other 3415 runners?  This is a good question.  I’m guessing the pros fall into this field, since I don’t see them having to submit qualifiers.  I also know that sponsors get some entries to do with what they wish.  And I’m sure the race itself gives out entries to deserving people, like those injured in the bombing in 2013.)

It seems people have differing opinions of the charity runners.  Some people think that they’ve done the work and raised a good chunk of money for charity, so they deserve to be there.  Others think that Boston should be only for those who qualify, because it is such a high bar.

How do I feel about it?  My opinion is sort of mixed.  I’m also coming at this as a person who will never qualify for Boston but who is also a retired marathoner, so I’m pretty confident in saying that I will never run Boston.

I don’t take issue with the charity runners.  Raising $5000+ is no easy feat for a lot of people, and this is a really important way for a lot of great charities to raise money.  With 2585 charity runners, that’s almost 13 million dollars, and that’s assuming each person only raises $5000 and doesn’t go over that amount.  That’s pretty awesome.

But I do think that there should be some limits.  I think that maybe running Boston as a charity runner should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, or at least a rare experience.  I see posts from people who are charity entrants every year for Boston, and I think that does take something away from how special it is.  In many ways, that is taking a spot from another person who could have raced.

Second, the attitude of some charity runners bothers me.  Yes, you did an awesome thing fundraising.  But you shouldn’t just be fundraising, you should be talking about that charity.  On race morning, you should be saying how proud you are to race for the cause, not just brag about how you are running Boston.  Because when you’re out there for a charity, you’re out there for something more than yourself.  Yes, you get the privilege of running an awesome race, but I’d like to think that you’re also there to benefit the charity, that you chose your charity because it’s something you’re passionate about and not because “This charity is letting me run Boston.”

So that’s where I stand.  How do you feel about Boston charity runners?

Making progress on my bike

This weekend, I returned to the group rides out at Princeton Sports.  This week, there were three distance options, which was nice.  One fast 25 mile ride of the Columbia Tri course, one 17 mile ride of the old Iron Girl Course, and one 14ish mile ride cutting off the worst part of the Iron Girl course.

I went for option B.  I knew I couldn’t keep up with the fast group, but I wanted the extra hills, so I went for the course I knew.  This was the first time I had really ridden my TT bike on an outdoor ride (the slow loops a few weeks back were a good trial, but not a real ride).  I was a little bit nervous about the whole thing but it’s a well supported ride, so I knew I would be fine.  I just didn’t want to fall!

It was a smaller group out for this ride, and I found myself somewhere mid-pack.  The TT bike is definitely twitchy and I’ll have to really work on staying steady.  Core work will definitely help, as will practice.

I definitely felt like my riding was slower than normal.  Climbing seemed harder than I remembered.  And I wanted to have a faster overall pace.  Of course, the downhills felt pretty speedy in aero.  And scary.  But I really thought my finish time was going to be significantly slower than what I was doing last year.

Turns out my final time was two minutes faster than when I was riding this course last May.  Two minutes isn’t a lot, and the downhills probably helped.  But then I looked at my Strava data.

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 4.42.01 PM

One great thing about Strava is that it gives you the time for your full distance as well as how you do on various segments that people have setup on the course.  (You can also compare to how other people do on certain segments, but I am so slow I don’t bother with those.)  And I hit a PR on a pretty significant climb near the end of the ride.  Now, I’ve only been using Strava since last year, so it’s possible that I have done it faster at some point, but I think the odds are not good, since I’m definitely a stronger cyclist than I was two years ago.

I still have a long way to go before my big race in September, but this is a good start.  Must keep riding those killer hills.

I did receive this item free in exchange for my honest review. I noticed that I had a little bit of back fat but I solved that problem by simply pulling my bra down in the back. This waist trainer definitely got me sucked in and eliminated any signs of love handles and gave me a nice lil shapely waistline.

DESCRIPTION FROM WEBSITE:
http://www.amazon.com/Trainer-Womens-Corset-Training-Cincher/dp/B0132KKSF6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1444977282&sr=8-1&keywords=azont#Ask

This waist cinchers corset is supported by 9 spiral steel bones, which is the fins material inside the corset.
It’s flexible and durable, as soft as plastic bones, can bend easily but recover quickly to origin.
So it’s comfortable to wear all day and improves your posture for an elegant look.
We upgrade the material, it is high elastic latex. Can be used for yoga, postpartum belly abdomen corset etc.

Does Waist Training/Corset Training Really work? Well I have...

Does Waist Training/Corset Training Really work? Well I have been seeing tons of before and after pics and I just have to know for myself!! I got my corset from Orchardcorset.com. The model is a CS-426 Puple/Black Paisley, 24". My waist is currently 31". I am supposed to be able to lose 5-7 inches off my waist. I am very skeptical about this, so I will not exaggerate my results. What you see is what you get!

As an injured vet, I suffer from chronic back pain. I read that corsets help to improve your posture. If I can improve my posture, hopefully I can get a bit of relief. We shall see.

Oh and This is an underbust corset (doesn’t cover breast) with 24 steel bones.

Race Day Anxiety

geralt / Pixabay

In one of the myriad of Facebook groups I’m in, there was recently a discussion of race day anxiety and whether or not it’s a normal thing.

It is.  It’s a totally normal thing.

Now, if you’re suffering from more than just race anxiety, if you find you’re anxious a lot of the time or it’s starting to affect your every day life, go see your doctor.  While there is a ton of stigma against mental health drugs, that is absolutely ridiculous.  We don’t judge a person for needing antibiotics or blood pressure medication, so why would we judge a person who needs an anti-anxiety medication?  If science can help you feel better and help your body work better, then why not go for it.

Yes, it would be great if natural cures worked.  And sometimes they do.  But sometimes, the problem goes beyond what relaxation techniques and good diet can cure.

There is no shame in needing help.

Race day anxiety is a different thing, and thankfully it doesn’t tend to affect every day life.  But those few days leading up to your race, man, it can get nervewracking, especially when you’re about to do your first race or you are tackling a new distance.

But there are some ways to deal with race day anxiety.  Here’s what has worked for me.

First off, I like to be overly prepared.  Read all of the race materials.  Look at the race’s website, look at the course maps (I don’t memorize them, but some people do).  If you’re local, go check out the course.  Drive the bike course or ride it if you can.  If you’re not local, look online for race reports.  See what others have said about the race.

Oh yes, and train.  Training is important.

Two nights before the race, make sure you get a good night’s sleep.  Yes, I said two nights before.  Because the night before the race, you may struggle to sleep, or you may have to get up early to get to the race.

The day before the race, get all your stuff together.  Lay it all out.  My friends like to make “flat runners” before big running races, meaning that they lay out all of their gear on a surface so that they can see that everything they need is right there.  It also makes it easier to put it all on in the morning.  If it’s a triathlon, lay out what you will wear in the morning and then make sure that everything you need in transition is packed in your bag.

Race morning, show up early.  Don’t wait til the last minute to get there.  Yes, extra sleep is nice, but I would much rather be at the race on time and not be freaking out about how I’m running late.

If you can, listen to some music before the race.  This always helps me.  I like to blast music in the car on the way to a triathlon, usually music that’s upbeat and that I won’t mind if it’s stuck in my head for the rest of the race.  Sing along at the top of your lungs if you want.  It’s even more fun with a friend.

A lot of people get nervous before getting in the water at a triathlon.  Deep breathing helps, but what also helps me is just jumping around and being silly.  Laugh.  Have fun.  Chat with the people around you.  Just get out of your head and remember that you’re doing something fun!

During the race, some people like to have a mantra that they run through their head.  I get bored with that, so during a swim, I’m often mentally singing a song to entertain myself.  Some people can just focus on the swimming.  That doesn’t work so well for me.  So I just sing a song.  Sometimes I think about what I’m going to eat after the race.  This is possibly why I’m not a faster swimmer.

These seem like silly tips that won’t work, but trust me, they do.  The big thing is always to trust your training.  You put in the work.  You can do this.

Keeping Busy

Source

Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony for the Borinqueneers – Source

Yesterday was a long day.  An awesome day, but a long day.  I went to the ceremony pictured above (my photos are much less awesome).  My job affords me a lot of very cool opportunities.

But it meant that yesterday was exhausting.  And I realized that when I get stressed, I forget to take care of myself.  Hydration, for example.  I realized that by the time I got out of the ceremony, I had managed to consume only about 24 ounces of water all day (plus two mugs of tea and a mug of coffee).  I try to get in 80 ounces before 5pm, so this wasn’t great.  And it probably contributed to my exhaustion.

I wanted nothing more than to head home, stop by a take-out place and get dinner, and plop down on the couch.  But that wasn’t really a viable option.  So instead, I got home, chugged some water, and hopped onto the treadmill to get in my 4 mile run while watching an episode of The West Wing.

(Side note – if you’re a West Wing fan and not listening to the podcast Josh Malina is doing with a friend discussing each of the episodes, you are missing out.)

And by the end of the run, I felt a lot better.  I still wanted to crawl into bed, but I definitely felt less exhausted.  And I was glad to have gotten in the workout.  My first tri of the season isn’t that far away, and I need to be getting in my workouts.  And also taking care of myself.  Today’s goal?  Lots of water.

Wednesday Workout Recap

Last week was rough!  So much so that I was too lazy on Monday night to prep my Tuesday post.  I just needed to sit on the couch and not do things.

Monday – Rest Day.  I’m really really good at these.

Tuesday – Trainer workout.  I thought I was gonna die.  These things are killer.  But I’m seeing progress.

Wednesday – My uncle was in town and offered to take me to dinner.  Free dinner? Count me in!  So no workout.

Thursday – Team Fight swim practice.  This was awesome.  Lots of drills and long swims, which was exactly what I needed.

Friday – Made up for Wednesday’s missed workout.  Did an hour trainer workout, then ran 4 miles.  My legs were not pleased, but it was a fast run.

Saturday – My legs remained unpleased.  I had a 6 mile run on the schedule, but by the end of 3, my legs had quit.  Done, not running anymore.  But I was determined to get through the workout, so I powerwalked the rest.  6 miles is better than 3.

Sunday – Outdoor ride got cancelled again because the weather was ridiculous.  So I rode 90 minutes on the trainer.  Nothing structured, so I just set a speed and pushed for it.  Felt pretty good.  Finished up with some weightlifting which I do not do enough of.

Keeping Up With Everything

Unsplash / Pixabay

As we enter into Spring (allegedly, given that it SNOWED yesterday), my training schedule is starting to ramp up into triathlon season.  I enjoyed the winter of base building, but I’m a little scared of what’s coming next.

I’m also dreading my twice-a-week swim because there is nothing I dislike more than getting to the pool at 6am and hoping I find a lane to share.

But this also means longer workouts and probably more two-a-day workouts.  And a lot of planning to make sure I’m keeping up with everything I have to do.

Last week was the first week that I got in all of my workouts in probably about a month, but for that, I blame bronchitis.  And it was hard.  My uncle was in town one night so I skipped my workout.  It was totally worth it, but then it meant I was four mile behind.  A quick exchange with my coach gave me a solution, but it wasn’t pretty.  Suddenly, I had a two hour brick workout on my schedule.  It went well, but the six mile run the next day did not.  My own fault for missing a workout.  The better plan would have been to get up early on Wednesday so I could run before work.  Lessons learned.

But my goal for the upcoming race season is to make sure that I prioritize my workouts while still managing to have a life. And that’s tough.  It’s going to mean getting up early to get in workouts.  While still making sure I get sufficient sleep.  And once the weather warms up, Saturday morning runs are going to have to happen early as well.  But that just leaves more time to enjoy the day.

For me, it’s all about looking at the week as a whole, figuring out what’s happening when, and what I have to do to make it all work.  It definitely gets a little crazy sometimes, but it’s worth it.

Why I Will Never Do An IRONMAN

I will never do an IRONMAN.  No, this isn’t a bash on the corporation.  I will never do a 140.6 either.  It’s not going to happen.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.  “Never say never.”

But I think this is one case where I can safely say never.

Why?

Well, I have a few reasons.  First off, do you know how long an IRONMAN is?  2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.  That is a long freaking time.

I have run two marathons.  I loved the sense of accomplishment, but I didn’t love the training.  In fact, I hated the training.  I’m a slow runner with little hope of getting a whole lot faster thanks to my heart rate issues.  So that means that long runs take hours upon hours.  I didn’t really love the racing either.  I’m glad I did it, but I am a retired marathoner at this point.

Now let’s take that and add on the other two elements of the IRONMAN distance.

A 2.4 mile swim.  Okay, that doesn’t sound horrifying.  I could probably survive that.  Not quickly, but it could get done with training.

112 mile bike.  I’m sure over the years, I will do some century rides.  Not super fast (see previously mentioned heart rate issues), but I could do it with training.

But did you see the key there?  Training.  An IRONMAN requires a ridiculous amount of training and as a slower athlete, that’s an even more significant amount of time.

Could I do it?  I mean, probably.  But the big key?  I don’t want to do it.  Not at all.  Sure, I watch those IRONMAN finish videos and think about how awesome they are.  But I don’t have any desire to put my body through that.  And I also know that I don’t have the dedication to put in that many hours of training along with long days at work.  I would burn out so quickly.

The point I’m making is that I know myself.  I know my body, I know my limits, and this is one point where I’m setting a limit.  And that’s okay.  I don’t have to do an IRONMAN and you don’t either.  No triathlete does.  It isn’t the end-all-be-all of triathlons.  If you want to do one, awesome!  I will support you on your way and cheer you on to the finish.  But if you don’t want to do one, you don’t have to.

I’ve talked about this before.  People think that doing a bigger, longer race is just a natural part of your progression in a sport.  But that’s not true at all.  It’s about finding what works best for you.  Think about it – there are plenty of sprinters who don’t run marathons.  Because they’ve found what they are the best at and love the best and they stick to it.

And yes, I’m saying this as a person who is tackling a longer race distance this year.  But it’s something that I want and more importantly, something I feel ready for.  Do I dread some of the training, sure.  But I know what I’m in for and I’m ready.

Don’t feel like you have to jump to the next race level before you’re ready.  Just because someone else is doing a marathon or a half marathon or a 140.6 or a 70.3 doesn’t mean that you have to as well.  And if you want to do it, make sure you know what you’re signing up for.  Yes, it can be worth it, but nothing worth achieving comes without hard work.

Wednesday Workout Recap

Well, I’m almost recovered from this stupid cold virus.  I need to get my immune system in gear!

Monday – Rest day.  Got this one done.

Tuesday – Trainer ride.  Couldn’t push it to the watts where I needed to be, but I found a good spot where I was pushing but not coughing.  I consider it a win.

Wednesday –  Easy 4 mile run

Thursday – Swim got cancelled, so I was lazy.

Friday – Crosstraining on the schedule, ended up having to walk all over downtown DC in heels (put in about 3 miles according to Google Maps), so I’m counting it.

Saturday – Quick 20 minute spin on the bike to stay loose

Sunday – Cherry Blossom Ten Miler.

Not bad, but I MUST get back to my workout schedule.  No more slacking.

Cheaters Never Win

With the Boston Marathon coming up soon, stories are coming out about people being disqualified from running the race.

For those new to the running scene (or who just don’t care), Boston is a “Big Deal” for a lot of runners.  To get into Boston, you have to run a qualifying time at another marathon based on your age/gender (I would have to run a 3:40 marathon, for example), and even that’s not a guarantee because so many people qualify that your entry can be based on how much you beat the qualifying time by.  (So a person my age who runs a 3:30 marathon has a better chance of getting in than a person who runs a 3:35 marathon.  Neither of which I will ever do.)

You can also run Boston through charity entries, which are awesome, but you have to raise a lot of money.  $5000 or more. Plus most of these charities have an entry process because so many people want to run so it’s not likely that someone rich who just wants to run Boston is going to pay $5000 and get to run.

(Of course, there are people who run on charity bibs but lie and say that they qualified and I think that’s stupid and those people should get over themselves.)

Anyway.  People do a lot of crazy things to get into Boston.  They cut the course in their qualifying race.  They have someone else run under their bib for a qualifier.  They cheat so they can get into the race.

I have zero respect for cheaters.  You can be a super slow marathoner who will never qualify for Boston and I will have way more respect for you than I will ever have for someone who cheats to get in.

Most recently, a story came out where a woman (you can Google her, I’m not giving her the link) posted a sad story about how she’s not running Boston this year.  She calls it a cautionary tale.  In her story, because of various life events, in both 2014 and 2015, she was unable to run after qualifying for Boston.  So last year, instead of letting the bib go to waste, she let a friend run under her bib.

This is NOT ALLOWED.  But as she says, everyone does it (everyone does not do it), and she didn’t charge any money, so it’s not a big deal.  But she got caught and now she is banned from the race.  And she begs their forgiveness and hopes they will someday let her back in.

Two issues.

Number one, it’s against the rules.  What’s the harm, you say?  Well, the big issue with switching bibs is medical.  If you are wearing a particular number and something happens to you, that number is used to identify you.  Let’s say something terrible happens at the race and you are knocked unconscious or worse.  You end up misidentified.  Nothing good comes of this.  When you enter a race, you often put emergency contact info in with your entry.  If that’s used after you get injured and it’s not your emergency contact who gets called, that’s little help.  If you’re using a stranger’s bib, it’s really no help at all.

And even if none of that happens, it’s against the rules.  Rules are rules.

But let’s go to the number two.

This lady left out a big part of her story.  Do you know when she qualified to run Boston in 2016?  At Boston in 2015.

But wait.  She didn’t run it.  She had a friend running with her bib.

So not only did she give away a bib that was non-transferable, she then lied and used that finishing time to get into Boston the following year.  But she doesn’t mention any of this part of the story in her so very sad blog post.

Cheaters never win, and we should have no pity for this woman.  Not only did she cheat, she then attempted to lie about it to get sympathy.

No tears for you here, Gia.

Race Report – 2016 Cherry Blossom Ten Miler

cucblogo

This was my sixth running of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler.  My recent ten mile races haven’t been all that great – all have been slower than I wanted.  Of course, I’ve also opted to run with friends and chat my way through the race, which leads to slower running.  And of course, last year’s race got cut short due to an accident.

My training has not been great leading up to this race.  In March, I took a week off for my brother and sister-in-law’s visit (worth it).  Then I got in a solid week or so of workouts, then I got a killer cold that turned into bronchitis that had me down for almost three weeks.  So… you know.  Not ideal.  I still have a slight lingering cough, but it’s really not a big deal.  I figured the race wouldn’t be terrible.

Then guess what happened?  MOTHER NATURE.

This was the Sunday forecast from the Capital Weather Gang. Awesome.

On Friday, when I went to packet pickup (which is awesome), it was around 80 degrees.  But that was going to change quickly.  A huge cold front came in.  The forecast for Sunday morning was high winds and temps in the 30’s with windchills in the 20’s.  And 45-50mph gusts of wind.  Not ideal.

The poor race organizers absolutely did their best though.  All unnecessary tents came down (they kept bag check and medical, I believe).  All the mile markers came down.  The Start/Finish banner came down.  And they had to rework the water stops so no one blew away and so there wasn’t a sea of cups in the water.  Unfortunately, they caught some heat about this on social media, which was a bit ridiculous.  Yes, mile markers are nice, but they don’t make a race. And at many of the mile marker spots, there were volunteers with bullhorns yelling out the mile.  Which means they were probably out there yelling for about an hour or more.  Awesome volunteer work.

Every single one of the volunteers out there yesterday were amazing.  I’m so thankful for every person who showed up.  Volunteers are incredible.

So my race.  Initially, I wanted to race well.  Then when I got sick, I just wanted to finish.  This race has a strict 14 minute per mile pace, so I just wanted to keep that.  I’m always in the last corral with the party people, so I have to be careful about that pace.

It was cold standing around before the race, but once I got started, it felt pretty good.  Mile one, I was under a 13 minute per mile pace.  That’s my usual goal as of late when I’m racing – stay under 13 minutes.  So I thought I would see what I could do.  I managed to hold a sub-13 through about mile 3, but mile 4-5 got a bit tough.  I hit the mile 5 mat right at 1:05 on my watch, putting me at exactly a 13 minute mile pace. I opted to push a bit harder to see if I could hold the sub-13 and finish under 2:10.

The winds were no joke during this race.  There were a few moments early on where the wind definitely pushed me to the side, and I’m no waif.  But there were also moments where we had some significant tailwinds which I think helped.

Speaking of tailwinds, I used Tailwind as my only fuel this race and I think it went well.  No need to slow to eat something.  Not that I need much to eat during a 10 miler, but since I’m out there 2 hours, I need something.

I managed to pull into the finish in 2:08:46.  Kept that sub-13 and even picked up the pace in the second half.  Pretty much a perfect race all in all.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to hurt tomorrow – going from being really cold right into running never goes well for me.  At least I had the walk up to the start.  That should help some.

I came home and immediately took a hot bath to get warm again.  It’s been a while since I raced in weather that cold!

Thanks again to every single volunteer and spectator out there.  I know it was a miserably cold day, and everyone who showed up is awesome.
